In 2010 we took in 35 surrendered guinea pigs and adopted out 22 pigs. In 2011 we took in 44 guinea pigs and placed 37 in new homes. Many of the surrendered guinea pigs are permanent sanctuary residents of Turtle Hill Farm due to old age or medical issues.

Billy and Barney, two sanctuary pigs. Billy, who is four years old, was severely neglected when we got him in March 2010. He had never had his nails clipped, he was infested with lice and appeared to have a broken hind leg. He can get around well now, but the leg is permanently bowed out. Barney, a two-year-old Teddy, had never had hay before and nearly died from digestive problems. They are best friends now and will live the rest of their lives at Turtle Hill Farm.

Billy's nails on his first day at Turtle Hill Farm. The vet had to trim them the first time with special clippers.

Cruel Cage

Mowgli and Puffin were kept in this tiny wire-bottomed cage without even a hiding place or soft spot to lie on. They had never had hay or fresh food. Luckily both pigs were young and resilient enough to overcome the neglect. See below for after pictures.

Update: Mowgli was adopted by a nice family and has a new friend named Pumpkin (also a Turtle Hill Farm graduate from August 2010).
